The Holy Spirit Chaplet by Blessed Elena Guerra

Blessed Elena Guerra was an Italian religious sister who dedicated her life to helping people rediscover the Holy Spirit.

She believed many Catholics had forgotten the importance of turning to the Holy Spirit in their daily lives. Through her prayers, writings, and unwavering faith, she encouraged the Church to renew this beautiful devotion.

Because of her tireless work, she became known as the "Apostle of the Holy Spirit." She wrote several letters to Pope Leo XIII, asking him to encourage Catholics around the world to grow closer to the Holy Spirit.

The Pope listened. He invited the entire Church to pray a novena before Pentecost each year and later published an encyclical on the Holy Spirit, helping renew this devotion throughout the Catholic world.

Inspired by her deep love for the Holy Spirit, Blessed Elena also wrote the Holy Spirit Chaplet, a beautiful prayer centered on the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. Throughout the chaplet we pray:

"Father, in the Name of Jesus, send forth Your Spirit and renew the world."

More than a century later, her message continues to inspire Catholics to welcome the Holy Spirit into their hearts and trust in His wisdom, strength, peace, and guidance.

How to Pray the Holy Spirit Chaplet

Written by Blessed Elena Guerra in 1896, this chaplet is a beautiful devotion that invites us to ask for the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit Chaplet has seven groups of seven beads, called septets. Each group represents one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

For each gift:

1. Read the invocation. 
2. On each of the seven beads pray: "Father, in the Name of Jesus, send forth Your Spirit and renew the world."
3. After the seventh bead, pray: "O Mary, who by the work of the Holy Spirit, conceived the Savior, pray for us."

Repeat these three steps for each of the seven gifts.

Prayers of the Holy Spirit Chaplet

1. Come, O Spirit of Wisdom, detach us from earthly things and infuse in us a love and taste of heavenly things.
   “Father, in the Name of Jesus, send forth your Spirit and renew the world.”
   “O Mary, who by the work of the Holy Spirit, conceived the Savior, pray for us.”
2. Come, O Spirit of Understanding, enlighten our minds with the light of your eternal truth and the riches of holy thoughts.
   “Father, in the Name of Jesus, send forth your Spirit and renew the world.”
   “O Mary, who by the work of the Holy Spirit, conceived the Savior, pray for us.”
3. Come, O Spirit of Counsel, make us docile to your inspirations and guide us in the way of salvation.
   “Father, in the Name of Jesus, send forth your Spirit and renew the world.”
   “O Mary, who by the work of the Holy Spirit, conceived the Savior, pray for us.”
4. Come, O Spirit of Fortitude, and give us strength, constancy and victory in the battle against our spiritual enemies.
   “Father, in the Name of Jesus, send forth your Spirit and renew the world.”
   “O Mary, who by the work of the Holy Spirit, conceived the Savior, pray for us.”
5. Come, O Spirit of Knowledge, be the Master of our souls and help us to put into practice Your teachings.
   “Father, in the Name of Jesus, send forth your Spirit and renew the world.”
   “O Mary, who by the work of the Holy Spirit, conceived the Savior, pray for us.”
6. Come, O Spirit of Piety, come to live in our heart to possess and sanctify all of our affections.
   “Father, in the Name of Jesus, send forth your Spirit and renew the world.”
   “O Mary, who by the work of the Holy Spirit, conceived the Savior, pray for us.”
7. Come, O Spirit of the Fear of the Lord, reign over our will and make us always disposed to suffer every evil rather than to sin.
   “Father, in the Name of Jesus, send forth your Spirit and renew the world.”
   “O Mary, who by the work of the Holy Spirit, conceived the Savior, pray for us.”

Closing Prayers

After praying through all seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, finish the chaplet with these closing prayers.

Invocation to Mary:

O most pure Virgin Mary, by your Immaculate Conception you were made a chosen tabernacle of Divinity by the Holy Spirit. Pray for us.

O most pure Virgin Mary, by the Mystery of the Incarnation you became true Mother of God by the Holy Spirit. Pray for us.
